Mutter Courage #4: SARA Uribe + JOHN Pluecker
For this special B R U N A event, the fourth in the MUTTER COURAGE program, an occasional reading series + conversation space curated by YANARA Friedland, we welcomed SARA Uribe—acclaimed Mexican author of the book Antígona González—and her US American translator JOHN Pluecker. They read from their own poetry and works in translation. This event was the first time that they co-presented bilingually in public in •Spanish and English•.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Born in 1978 in Querétaro, SARA Uribe has lived in Tamaulipas since 1996. She graduated with an undergraduate degree in Philosophy; she received the Carmen Alardín Regional Poetry Prize in 2004, the Tijuana National Poetry Prize in 2005 and the Clemente López Trujillo Poetry Prize in 2005. She has been a grantee of the Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (2006-2007) and of the Programa de Estímulos a la Creación y Desarrollo Artístico (2010 & 2013). She has published Lo que no imaginas (2005), Palabras más palabras menos (2006), Nunca quise detener el tiempo (2008), Goliat (2009), and Siam (2012). Her poems have appeared in periodicals and anthologies in Mexico, Peru, Spain, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
JOHN Pluecker is a language worker who writes, translates, organizes, interprets, and creates. In 2010, they co-founded the transdisciplinary collaborative Antena and in 2015 the local social justice interpreting collective Antena Houston. Their undisciplinary work is informed by experimental poetics, language justice, radical aesthetics/politics, and cross-border/cross-language cultural production. They have translated numerous books from the Spanish, including most recently Gore Capitalism (2018) and Antígona González (2016). Their book of poetry and image, Ford Over, was released in 2016 from Noemi Press. They are a member of the Macondo Writers Workshop and have exhibited work at Blaffer Art Museum, the Hammer Museum, Project Row Houses, and more.

SARA Uribe (Querétaro, 1978) radica desde 1996 en Tamaulipas. Es licenciada en Filosofía. Recibió el Premio Regional de Poesía Carmen Alardín 2004, el Premio Nacional de Poesía Tijuana 2005 y el Premio Nacional de Poesía Clemente López Trujillo 2005. Ha sido becaria del Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (2006- 2007) y del Programa de Estímulos a la Creación y Desarrollo Artístico (2010 y 2013). Ha publicado Lo que no imaginas (2005), Palabras más palabras menos (2006), Nunca quise detener el tiempo (2008), Goliat (2009), y Siam (2012). Poemas suyos han aparecido en publicaciones periódicas y antologías de México, Perú, España, Canadá, Reino Unido y Estados Unidos.
JOHN Pluecker trabaja el lenguaje y con el lenguaje; escribe, traduce, organiza, interpreta y crea. En 2010, co-fundó el colaborativo transdisciplinario Antena y en 2015 el colectivo local de interpretación para la justicia social Antena Houston. Su trabajo se nutre de las poéticas experimentales, las estéticas radicales y la producción cultural trans-fronteriza. Ha publicado numerosos libros traducidos del español al inglés, incluyendo más recientemente Capitalismo Gore (2018) y Antígona González (2016). En 2016, Noemi Press publicó su libro de poesía e imágenes, Ford Over. Forma parte del Taller de Escritura de Macondo y ha expuesto su trabajo en el Blaffer Museum, Hammer Museum, Project Row Houses y otros lugares.

MUTTER COURAGE is an occasional reading series and conversation space curated by YANARA Friedland, which invites writers at the corner of poetic, embodied, and intersectional practices to share their work with the B R U N A community. MUTTER COURAGE refers to the name of the main character in Berthold Brecht’s eponymous play. A relentless maker in a war-torn world, MUTTER COURAGE inspires this series, which unfolds in expressions of courage in voice.
